The first contact of the natives inhabitants of Morro de São Paulo with the civilized man occurred on june 29th, 1535 when the noble Spanish Francisco Romero and his retinue landed in what was the Province of Ilhéus.

The history of this island became marked with episodes of wars and unique events such as the Aymorés’ War ( extremly savage indians) and the Holland Invasion in Bahia ( main cause of the construction of the fortress) without mention the visit of the Emperor Dom Pedro I and the Marquise of Santos that bathed themselves in the great source also known as source of the heaven.
Nowadays we have the great satisfaction to make part of stretches of this history for we are pioneer at maritime transportation and tourism in our region.
